Art Director – Design Director

Job description: The Art Director (AD) will be the senior voice of visual branding for KCRW as we evolve from a beloved public radio station to a multi-platform media and culture club. AD will be responsible for elevating and refining the visual language of programs and events, digital advertising and newsletters, membership and merchandise. If KCRW is a culture club that people rely on for the most cutting-edge music, news, culture and events, you make sure we look like it.

You are voracious when it comes to culture and visual trends and enjoy a broad range of styles. You enjoy mentoring and managing but relish the opportunity to jump in and knock out a hand-illustrated poster graphic or a typographic title treatment. You will report to the Head of Marketing and manage a small team of graphic and digital designers. You have a minimum of 7 years of experience with increasing responsibility in design-forward settings and are comfortable working hand-in-hand with marketing analytics.

You will lead branding sessions, present inspiration boards, visual concepts, supervise and design promotional assets, and establish protocols while working closely with the Digital Director, Communications Director, Events, Membership and Programming Departments. You are a KCRW fan and are excited about the opportunity to boost the independent voice of culture in Southern California. You are excited for the sense of purpose that comes with uniting curious minds and creating a more informed community.

  • Love of design styles, trends and their ability to communicate meaning
  • Current graphic design skills with a broad range of tools and styles since we cover the content spectrum from serious and thoughtful to fun and fresh
  • Experience with digital and print, such as e-newsletter, ad design, social and event graphics
  • Must be comfortable managing the everyday flow of assets with a small team, yet be able to delegate to create time for big picture branding projects
  • Minimum of 7 years experience in design-forward brand, agency or organization
  • Good manager, communicator and listener

  • Thorough design education, the voice of expertise, excellence in Adobe Creative Suite
  • Understanding of best-practices for both design and marketing, typography, composition
  • Even keeled temperaments appreciated.
