This first novel, Shards (Grove Press, Black Cat; Original Edition), follows the narrator who just happens to be named Ismet Prcic from Bosnia to America, from a radical theater group to a creative writing program. The shards are the pieces of personality Prcic left behind in Bosnia. The novel chronicles the fragmentation caused by war and the formation of a new identity.
