Here-s a rose from Spain, made with Cabernet Sauvignon.
The color is of clear, bright rubies. In your nose, you can smell the ripest red berries, almost ready to drop from their own weight. The taste is immediately bright, very rich, fruit that stays in your mouth, with an impressive finish. No easy-going rose, this one.
Excellent match with anything grilled, or shellfish, or just on its own for a transportational experience.
-99 Marques de Grinon, Syrah, Montes de Toledo, Spain: 8.95
Syrah is a high-quality red grape, thought to have originated in the Middle East. Its claim to fame came from France-s Rhone region where it has been grown since Roman times. When grown in Spain, Australia (where it goes by the name Shiraz), or California, it becomes something very different than in France. It takes on a spice with characteristics of sweet blackberries, black currants and plums, with a bit of smokiness.
A perfect match with rice dishes, roasted vegetables, meats, and especially good with a BLT.
-99 Lost Wolf Shiraz, Barossa Valley, Australia: 9.99
This area of Western Australia is one of the most renowned grape-growing regions on the whole continent. And, more than half of all Australian wine is produced in this state. The Barossa Valley is known for its Shiraz (the Australian name for Syrah). This is slightly jammy in the nose, with some softening from new oak, but a finish of rich, ripe fruit and spice, with a long finish.
This just has to go with anything you-d throw on the Barbie. A peppered steak would bring out the spicy, peppery properties. Almost any substantial meat would do the job, or a thick Portobello mushroom, drizzled with some olive oil and salt and pepper.
-00 Bugey (boo-Jay) Gamay, Ain, Eastern France: $ 7.99
This small area (only 625 acres) was the birthplace (1755) of the famous French food writer Brillat-Savarin. The exact location is halfway between Lyon and Geneva. Brillat Savarin-s most famous statement was, -Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are.- To honor him, a cheese, an omelet, a fish, a garnish and a consomm- all bear his name.
This 100 percent Gamay wine is medium ruby/garnet in color, with an extremely ripe strawberry nose and a hint of black pepper. The taste is fruity, and can be slightly chilled to enjoy before, during or after a meal.
A food match would be anything from sliced melon and fresh ham to fried chicken.
-00 Galhaud Old Vines Grenache Noir, Catalan, France: 0.99
This wine is officially from the Vin de Pays, Catalan. Vin de Pays translates as -country wine.- This area is located in the South of France in the Pyrenees Orientales area, near the border between France and Spain, one of the prime surfing spots in Europe. The soils are rocky and the vines work like crazy to produce their fruit. The result is a very fruity wine, made in France from a grape, primarily grown in Spain.
A color of deep garnet, with a nose of ripe red fruits and a taste of heavy fruit and mild spice.
A wonderful pairing with rustic, peasant food. Grills, fish, vegetables. Can be slightly chilled.
-98 Chateau Malmaison, Moulis-Medoc, France: 9.95
This wine is produce by Nadine de Rothschild, the widow of Baron Edmond Rothschild. Recently, Nadine was in the news as she has purchased properties in Argentina where she will plant, not the Argentine Malbec, but the French Bordeaux Malbec and other famous Bordeaux varietals. Her interest lies in the soils and altitude of the vineyard areas in Argentina-s Mendoza region.
Some would say that a Bordeaux-style wine would not qualify as a fruit bomb, but this one, primarily containing Merlot, is often referred to as -sweet-. A rich dark garnet color, with a nose of red cherries and earth and a finish of sweet fruits and mild roundness.
This wine will make a good companion to a meal of substance and can even take on a creamy sauce.
-01 Cascina Ca-Rossa, Roero Arneis, Piemonte, Italy: 2.99
Unbelievable that you can find an Arneis for this price! A limited supply grape variety, grown only in the northwest of Italy, and with some experimentation in California. Once, almost extinct, but now this grape is making a comeback. This wine is a pale to medium gold color, with a very fragrant nose of apples, pears and a hint of licorice. The taste is wildly perfumy and lustrous-feeling on your tongue. The finish has a bit of a lanolin feel to it, and causes you to utter, -mmmmm...-
Perfect on its own, or with salads, vegetables, maybe even this could tackle an artichoke or asparagus. Certainly wonderful with light pastas and rice dishes.
-01 Cascina Val del Prete, Carolina Vineyard, Barbera d-Alba, Piemonte, Italy: 9.95
The other main red grape of northwest Italy, Barbera can be produced as a rich, dark, rustic wine that makes tomatoes come to life, or in a more contemporary, New World style that is bright, cheerful and extremely fruity. This is the one to match that definition! The wine is dark garnet in color, with a nose of cocoa, cherries, subtle vanilla. The finish will make you think of ripe tomatoes, warmed by the sun.
Your mind will instantly tell you to have some pasta or pizza with tomatoes, garlic, basil. Or a rich eggy pasta with butter and thyme sauce.
-00 A Mano, Apulia, Italy: $ 9.99
This wine is from the hot, deep southern part of Italy, on the Adriatic side. The grape is Primitivo, now known to be the cousin, or brother of Zinfandel. The wine is made by an American winemaker who fell in love with the area and a woman. They married and together make this wine by hand, therefore called - A Mano.-
Deep, dark purple in color, a nose of rich black berries and some anise, a taste of very ripe berries and jams.
Excellent with rustic foods, tapas, cheese.
-99 Palazzo della Torre, Valpolicella Ripasso, Veneto, Italy: 8.95
The richest wine in this area of Italy is called Amarone, made from the Corvina grape. The wine is expensive and worth a special occasion. But, to enjoy the fruit bomb aspect of Amarone, at a Tuesday night price, this fills the bill. The wine is made half of regular grapes and half with the dried, grapes that make up Amarone.
The method is called Ripasso, which produces richness and body. After the wine is fermented in the usual way, it-s placed into casks where the residue or lees from a prior batch of Amarone has been stored. The process lasts for 2-3 weeks, adding color and complex flavors.
Dark ruby in color, fruity and heavy with ripe dark fruits on the nose and a rich, luscious taste.
This wine goes with the heavier foods of fall, or any roasted or grilled meats.
-00 Havemeyer Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Spatlese, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany: 1.95
This German star comes from the prime area for production of Riesling in Germany. The vineyards are located on slopes that sees the southerly sun most of the day and ripen best here. The grapes are late-picked (spatlese) for maximum fruitiness.
Piesport is a famous village, situated in the middle of the horseshoe bend in the Mosel River. Goldtropfchen is the most revered and famous of the single vineyard areas, which are rare. This wine has been unavailable for ten years, just coming back onto the market.
Pale straw-gold in color, with a flowery, honeysuckle nose, that delivers a rich, creamy, honeyed taste, with a long finish.
-00 Norman Vineyards Zinfandel -The Monster-, Paso Robles: 9.99
The Central Coast of California, which ranges from Santa Barbara to Monterey is the hot spot of the world right now, when it comes to discussion of wines. Particularly, Paso Robles, where the Rhone varietals are attracting even the native French to purchase vineyard properties. Along with Syrah the other great grape of this area is Zinfandel. Once thought to be a native grape to California, now known to have originated in the area of Croatia, this grape is nonetheless the standard-bearer of what a California fruit bomb is all about.
The wine is almost opaque in its deepness of ruby color. It has a nose of jam, just off the stovetop. Layers and layers of fruit will melt in your mouth.
THE wine for wild game or roast pork, or barbequed baby back ribs and can take on any type of strongly seasoned dish.
-99 Tablas Creek Vineyard Reserve Cuvee, Paso Robles: 4.95
This is the California project of the Perrins Chateau de Beaucastel in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, France. The vines have been imported from Beaucastel, as part of the French invasion of Paso Robles.
100 percent organically grown and farmed, this is a traditional Rhone blend of Mourvedre, Grenache Noir, Syrah and Counoise.
In California, the wine becomes an intense, fruity, highly extracted experience. The color is dark brownish-ruby, with ripe cherries, raspberries and currants on the nose, and a velvety taste and feel in your mouth.
Perfectly matched with....everything! Except, maybe lima beans.
