Gin; California's Foie Gras Ban; The Flavor of Cannabis

On July 1 California will be the first state in the nation to ban the sale, serving and production of foie gras. Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo of Animal and Son of a Gun Restaurants say the ingredient is irreplaceable in the kitchen and Lesley Barger Suter of Los Angeles magazine questions who will be responsible for enforcing the ban. Speaking of illegal substances, Good Food producer Gillian Ferguson ventures to find out more about medical marijuana edibles. She watches as Joey - aka Big Sexy - of Big Sexy's Sinful Sweets makes cannabutter and attends a private dinner hosted by Nguyen Tran and Laurent Quenioux of Starry Kitchen in which the flavor of cannabis is the star of the show. Nancy Radke details how a series of earthquakes in the parmesan producing region of Italy has devastated parmesan producers. Jonathan Gold takes us to South LA for Yucatan food and Dr. Carson Chow spells out the mathematics of obesity. Plus, Good Food segment producer Laryl Garcia talks to Lesley Jacobs Solmonson about the history of gin.

Nancy Radke is the director of the US Information Office for the Consorzio del Formaggio Parmigiano-Reggiano. She explains that three very unusual earthquakes recently hit the Parmesan producing region of Italy. Over 600,000 wheels of cheese were affected.

Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo of Animal and Son of a Gun restaurants lament the impending foie gras ban. As of July 1, the sale, production and serving of foie gras will be illegal in California. The State of California is the first state in the union to ban the delicacy.

Who is going to enforce the ban? Lesley Barger Suter of Los Angeles magazine, who  researched enforcement while she was writing an article on the ban, was continuously transferred to various departments only to discover that no one knows who is going to enforce the ban.

Good Food producer Gillian Ferguson was intrigued by the wide variety and creativity of the edibles in the medicinal marijuana community. She visits The Farmacy on Abbot Kinney in Venice, where they sell everything from cannabis-laced peppermint patties to bottles of "medicated" strawberry lemonade. She also visits with Joey, the baker behind Big Sexy's Sinful Sweets and attends a Chinese herb and weed dinner hosted by Starry Kitchen where the flavor of cannabis is the star of the meal.

He works in the branch concerned with Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, where he's been studying the mathematics of obesity.
