    Urban Community Garden

Producer Jennifer Ferro takes a trip to the middle of the most crime ridden part of Los Angeles to visit the Burlington Avenue Community Garden, which uses volunteer prison inmate labor to keep it going. Host Even Kleiman speaks to food scientist, Shirley Corriher - who takes the mystery out of chemical leavenings like baking soda and baking powder. Two Italian chefs take listeners on a walk through the farmers market giving recipes for the fruits and vegetables they find. Greg Dicum explores the politics of coffee, and Jonathan Gold finds restaurants where you have to cook your food. All this plus the market report.
