When I first started in television, a thirty-minute show was about twenty-five minutes of show and five minutes of commercials, which seemed like a good deal at the time. You had a little commercial message at the top of the show, some network promos, then the first half of a story, what we called, grandly, like Shakespeare might have – Act One – and then there would be some commercials which were unrelated to the content of the show itself – then back for Act Two of the show, and then a few commercials to cushion the transition between programs....
