Youth Radio Special Edition

On Tuesday, January 4, 2000, at 2:30 pm KCRW (89.9 FM) presents a special edition of -The Politics of Culture,- featuring a half-hour documentary, specially produced for KCRW by Youth Radio, and which KCRW will later uplink by satellite to the public radio system. A timely topic for a new century, the subject is -Patriotism,- and the program is an honest portrayal of how American youth today think about their country. Done in a feature segment style, the many voices speak of both pride and alienation, and how their unique ethnic identities blend or conflict with the notion of what it means to be an American.

Youth Radio, based in Berkeley, CA, is a youth development organization that has trained more than 1,650 teenagers in broadcast journalism, production, engineering and media advocacy since 1992. Youth Radio has brought youth voices to the airwaves in hundreds of programs and commentaries, many of which have won national awards.

Youth Radio programs are broadcast regularly on National Public Radio news programs, as well as PRI-s -The World- and -Marketplace,- and Pacifica Network News. Listeners will remember the gripping diary of email communications between Youth Radio reporter, Finnegan Hammill and -Adona,- a Kosovar Albanian, as NATO forces began their assault on the former Yugoslavia, heard on NPR-s -Morning Edition.-
