The Living Sisters: Run for Cover
The Living Sisters – Run for Cover EP
We begin our 2013 here at the KCRW Album Preview with a record that looks forward as well as looks back. The Living Sisters is the project featuring three local female singer/songwriters, Eleni Mandell, Inara George (The Bird & the Bee) & Becky Stark (Lavender Diamond). On their new mini-album, they are joined by Alex Lilly (of Obi Best & Touche fame), making for a superstar quartet built for lovely harmonies and feeling like true family. And like a true family, there are many facets of their sound, as demonstrated by this diverse collection of covers, songs which range from country legend Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” to an unexpected funky take on Funkadelic’s “Can You Get to That?” Also included are a jazz standard, a version of “Que Sera, Sera” (inspired by Sly & the Family Stone’s version), and a couple of songs associated with Patsy Cline. It’s a fun batch of tunes and good evidence that Los Angeles is home to some of the best musical talent in world. All four ladies are busy with their respective solo projects (not to mention motherhood for Mandell & George, who both recently gave birth to twins!) But like with the holidays, it’s nice to get the whole family together.
