Mark Slouka's Brewster (W.W. Norton & Company) is about the bond between two teenage boys raised in Brewster, a bleak Upstate New York town. The intensity of the novel is the result of psychological wounds administered by small-town families confused by the volatile politics of the 1960's. We explore passion as an alternative to irony in the creation of dramatic, lyrical prose.
