FROM THIS EPISODE

Arizona Senator John McCain has managed to hold his Senate seat for 30 years, but now at age 80, he’s in a tough fight for re-election. He’s not the only normally shoo-in Republican who might be sweating a little more than usual this election season. Is Donald Trump to blame?

Also, the American Horizons PAC promised donors a chance to win dinner with Trump, and it raised $1.1 million from over 20,000 Trump supporters; but the PAC has no connection to Trump or his campaign.

Then, Mexican music superstar Juan Gabriel died
Sunday at his home in Santa Monica at the age of 66. We remember the life and music of one of the most beloved performers in Latin music.

Next, we have about 40 trillion microbes living in and on us. Until recently, we thought they were the enemy, but now we know they keep us alive. Science writer Ed Yong wrote about the promise and limitations of our microbiome in his new book titled, “I Contain Multitudes: The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life.”

And finally, Fall is right around the corner and that means new TV shows. So, what’s worth DVR-ing this Fall?

The down-ticket Trump effect 8 MIN, 7 SEC

Arizona Senator John McCain has managed to hold his Senate seat for 30 years, but he is in a tough fight for re-election. McCain will face-off in a primary Tuesday against Kelli Ward, a conservative former state senator. Polls show McCain likely winning that race, but then he’ll face the Democratic challenger, Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick, in November. McCain’s not the only shoo-in Republican who might be sweating a little more than usual this election season. Even the wealthiest man in Congress, California Rep. Darrell Issa, is campaigning hard for his ninth term. The string that ties it all together is the guy at the top of the ticket, Donald Trump.

PAC puts on Trump dinner contest, misleads donors and raises $1 million 7 MIN, 31 SEC

The website for the American Horizons PAC – dinnerwithtrump.org – looks just like Donald Trump’s campaign website. The PAC, which is run by a Maryland man named Ian Hawes, promised donors a chance to win dinner with Trump, and it raised $1.1 million from over 20,000 Trump supporters. American Horizons, however, has no connection to Trump or his campaign. Are Hawes’ actions illegal?

How the 40 trillion microbes in and on us shape our lives 14 MIN, 20 SEC

We have about 40 trillion microbes living in and on us. In other words: a lot of germs. Until recently, we thought they were the enemy. Now we know they keep us alive. They are, as science writer Ed Yong says, the unsung heroes of human existence. Yong wrote about the promise and limitations of our microbiome in his new book titled, “I Contain Multitudes: The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life.”
