Crossing the River, Feeling Watched 19 MIN, 19 SEC

First, in his junior year of high school, Jeff Emtman left his home and everything he knew to live and study in a tiny village nestled in the Cascade Mountain range of Washington state. He was an outsider among outsiders in a tight-knit rural community, and it wasn't long before Jeff felt the unmistakable feeling of being watched.

Produced by Jeff Emtman and Bethany Denton, the editor for KCRW was Nick White. Music from Swamp Dog, Flowers and Serocell.

Fear of Silence 9 MIN, 11 SEC

Then... in the second story from Here Be Monsters, the producers look behind the figurative curtain of radio and podcast producing, at something we call 'room tone.’ Jeff calls back crow researcher and previous program guest Kaeli Swift and asks her what it was like to sit in silence with a stranger. And Bethany explains the differences in the anxieties that she and Jeff have towards silence.

Produced by Jeff Emtman and Bethany Denton. Music from The Black Spot.
