Opening her candidacy for the US Senate, Orange County Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez may have tripped over an ill-timed joke with ethnic stereotypes -- including a war whoop. We hear how it sounded and how it's playing in parts of the state where Sanchez is not yet well known.

Also, there's a lot at stake in tomorrow's run-off election for an LA City Council seat that sprawls from Hancock Park through Silver Lake and over the Hollywood hills to Sherman Oaks. A long-time City Hall insider faces a challenger who wants to be known as Mr. Outside.

Sanchez Stumbles into the California Senate Race 12 MIN

Orange County Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is a candidate to replace retiring Barbara Boxer in the US Senate. At this weekend's State Democratic Convention, Sanchez had a chance to introduce herself statewide. At one stop, she gave an informal talk to a caucus of Indian Americans — that's Americans of descent from India. She told the story of a phone call from a man who wanted to support her campaign and how she confused an Indian American with Native Americans -- complete with a stereotypical war cry.

That moment reportedly became the talk of the convention — and not to Sanchez's advantage. Sanchez, from Orange County, is not well known statewide. The consensus leader for her party's US Senate nomination is Kamala Harris, who's run twice for Attorney General—and won.

Carolyn Ramsay has been the chief of staff for LA City Councilman Tom LaBonge, who's been termed out of office. Ramsay is LaBonge's hand-picked successor. In a multi-candidate primary, she won by just 85 votes out of 240,000 cast. Her challenger is David Ryu, who's trying to make a virtue out of his inexperience. Gene Maddaus is covering the race for the LA Weekly.
