FROM THIS EPISODE

Democratic Governor Gray Davis and Republican challenger Bill Simon debated on one stage, one time, for one hour today. There were few specifics, a greater number of attacks and one attempt to recount a joke from a Tonight Show appearance. Simon is hoping to energize his campaign and cast doubt on the Governor-s trustworthiness. Davis is standing on his record, lashing out at Simon-s legal difficulties and telling voters that governing need not be a popularity contest. We engage in a spirited debate over the debate with a political writer from the San Francisco Chronicle, and senior officials form the California Republican and Democratic Parties.
Managing Editor Kyle McKinnon guest hosts.
  • Reporter-s Notebook: How Will Santa Monica Embrace the Homeless?
In Santa Monica, residents, business owners and tourists have been complaining about the distressing number of homeless people sleeping in doorways and camping in picturesque parkland. Hanna Heineman, who covers city hall for the Santa Monica Mirror, reports that free meals are making the city a magnet for the homeless while overtaxing social services.
