With 10 million constituents and a 15 billion-dollar budget, LA County's five supervisors run one of America's biggest public agencies. But they only meet in public once a week and, according to the LA Times, make 90 percent of the their decisions without public debate. Richard McKee, President of the California First Amendment Coalition, a nonprofit that promotes the people's right to know, voices concern that the Board is violating the Brown Act which strictly limits the content of closed-door meetings. Then, while expressing a desire to increase access to public information, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky defends the Board's actions and convocation of public hearings.
  • Newsmaker: Comedian and Musician Dudley Moore Dies
    Dudley Moore, British actor, comedian and musician, died this morning at age 66. The cause was pneumonia, a complication of supranuclear palsy, a progressive neurological disease. The multi-talented Moore was probably best known for the films 10 and Arthur. Tony Bill is a producer and director who co-owned the Venice restaurant 72 Market Street with Dudley Moore. Tony Bill remembers his late friend.

    The Exodus from Egypt, a central event in Jewish tradition, is celebrated during Passover. But according to a new Torah, published by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, the Exodus may not have happened exactly as we know it. That doesn't bother David Lieber, President emeritus of the University of Judaism. The editor of the new text, The editor of the new text, Etz Hayim, stresses that spiritual truth is never a slave to historic fact.
