FROM THIS EPISODE

Five states allow assisted suicide for terminally ill patients who want to end their own suffering. Support is growing for a bill in the State Senate to permit that in California.  But opponents warn of a slippery slope that could lead to doctors inducing death for the wrong reasons.

Also, the LAPD has beefed up patrols in South LA and Boyle Heights because of an increase in killings.  But recent numbers are nothing compared to the 1990's and early 2000's.

Do Californians Have the Right to Die? 18 MIN, 11 SEC

In California, assisted suicide is a felony crime.  So, when 29-year-old Brittany Maynard was diagnosed with terminal cancer, she moved to Oregon where it's legal.  Before she died, she made her case public with videos that went viral, advocating that the so-called "the right to die" be made legal in California.  That has reinvigorated a movement and produced  the End of Life bill in the State Senate.

What Does the Rising Homicide Rate Say about South LA? 7 MIN, 29 SEC

Last month, there were 29 homicides in Los Angeles, compared to 21 in January of last year.  That increase has led the LAPD to beef up its presence in the Southeast, 77th, Newton and Hollenbeck Divisions.  Extra officers are on duty — and in uniform.  LA Times reporter Jill Leovy reported on every homicide that occurred in the year 2007 -- during an epidemic of killing that began in the 1990's.  She created the paper's Homicide Report blog and wrote a book, just out, called Ghettoside: A True Story of Murder in America.
