FROM THIS EPISODE

Today, as Southern California Edison defaulted on hundreds of millions of dollars in payments due, the State Legislature began the process of getting into the power business to protect some 24 million consumers. The rolling blackouts that hit Northern California are expected to hit the Southland this evening and continue tomorrow. We'll hear from utilities, power suppliers, legislators and consumer groups about the prospects here in the Southland for short- and long-term relief.
  • Newsmaker: Rolling Blackouts - Traffic lights, elevators and ATM's were among the casualties when the Independent System Operator told utilities today to let the blackouts begin. The ISO's Jan Smutney-Jones cautions consumers to get ready by turning off unnecessary appliances and preparing to turn on a flashlight.
