Less than two weeks ago, TV news shows aired videotape of a handcuffed 16-year old being manhandled by Inglewood police. As angry crowds stormed City Hall and demanded action, Mayor Roosevelt Dorn said the tape showed the officers committed felony crimes. District Attorney Steve Cooley quickly empanelled a grand jury, which last night indicted Officer Jeremy Morse for felony assault under color of authority, Bijan Darvish for filing a false incident report. Defense attorneys for the two officers claim their clients were -justified- and -restrained.- We look at the impact of saturation media coverage and the public-s rush to judgment with Lou Cannon, a 30-year Metropolitan Police veteran, and civil rights attorney Connie Rice.
  • Newsmaker: Longshore Union Trades High Tech for Better Wages
    Since July 1, when the contract ran out between the Longshore and Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime Association, 10,500 dockworkers at the Ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and others along the West Coast have been working on a day-to-day basis. Now, an end to negotiations appears near. David Greenberg, of the Los Angeles Business Journal, says that the union appears ready to trade low-tech jobs for higher benefits.
