FROM THIS EPISODE

California voters will likely face two initiatives next year dealing with plastic bags. Both measures are creatures of the plastic bag industry in its fight with grocery stores.  We hear how voters might be caught in the middle.

Also on the program, Exxon denied global warming for 20 years — at the same time it was planning how to exploit it. Now, some members of Congress want Exxon to face prosecution.

Playing Politics with Plastic Bags 15 MIN, 32 SEC

Last year, the legislature passed and Governor Brown signed a ban on plastic bags in California. The ban won't go into effect unless voters approve it -- but that wasn't enough. The plastic bag industry protested and gathered enough signatures to put a measure on next year's ballot, and is now gathering signatures for a second measure — which could lead to widespread confusion. (We asked the plastic bag makers who wrote the initiatives to appear on our program, but they declined our invitation.)

Local Congressman Wants Probe of Exxon 8 MIN, 26 SEC

For years, tobacco companies knew about the dangers of smoking, but publicly denied their own scientists' findings. They were prosecuted under federal law. Now, members of Congress are demanding that Exxon be investigated for similar violations — based on investigative reporting by the Columbia Journalism School's Project on Energy and the Environment, which found that Exxon knew about climate change for 20 years—and made plans to exploit it—while telling the public the science was unreliable.
