"Beam me up, Scotty" entered the English language when Star Trek was a television series in the late 1960's. Scotty, the can-do chief engineer on the Starship Enterprise, operated the transporter that beamed crew-members aboard from distant planets. Today, the Canadian actor who played Scotty died at the age of 85 from pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease. Brian Lowry of Variety remembers James Doohan.
