When he was Governor, Ronald Reagan called on the legislature to “cut, squeeze and trim,” but California has never seen anything like the budget reductions proposed today by Arnold Schwarzenegger. On Reporter’s Notebook, Story Corps is still taking reservations.
FROM THIS EPISODE
Today, Governor Schwarzenegger made good on his promise of 10% budget cuts across the board in state government. With a $14 billion dollar deficit, he said that "tough times" create "historic opportunities." The Governor's latest budget would mean closing 48 state parks and beaches, cutting guaranteed school funding by hundreds of millions, giving as many as 50,000 prisoners early release, and a whole lot more.
The Story Corps’ Airstream trailer will be parked at MacArthur Park in downtown Los Angeles from now until the 2nd of next month, and NPR is still taking reservations. Listeners know that means a 40-minute conversation between two close family members with one CD going to them and another to the Library of Congress. It could also mean broadcast on one of NPR’s signature daily news programs.
