FROM THIS EPISODE

LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy has dismissed a vote of no-confidence from the teachers' union as "nonsense." He's happy that a poll of civic groups is supportive of his reforms. But that's just part of the story.  How did the no-confidence vote get started?  What does it mean for the kids? We hear from teachers on both sides of the vote who may agree with each other more than they disagree. Also, is Kobe Bryant's torn Achilles tendon the end of an era?

Image-for-WWLA.jpgOn our rebroadcast of today's To the Point, companies get patents on human genes to give them incentive to conduct expensive research into what those genes can reveal about an individual's chances of contracting disease. But is that patenting life itself?  We hear about today's arguments at the US Supreme Court in a case that could determine the future of "personalized medicine."

Reporter's Notebook Prospects for Lakers and Kobe Bryant after His Achilles Rupture

The LA Lakers defeated the San Antonio Spurs last night at Staples Center, a surprise for more than one reason. The Spurs have the much better record this season. But, more importantly, the Lakers were one man short: the man who's been playing almost every minute of every recent game — even when team officials wished that he wouldn't. Kobe Bryant is out for the season and maybe longer than that.

Main Topic Grown-Ups Continue the Battle over Educating Children

Almost half the members of LA Unified's teachers' union have voted "no confidence" in reform-minded Superintendent John Deasy. Out of 33,000 members, the count was 16,040 to 1,647. Even before the vote was tallied, Deasy said he was "too busy working to serve all students… to pay attention to this nonsense."  But he says he is "gratified and heartened" by a poll by a new coalition of civic and community groups that's very supportive of his efforts.
