Los Angeles Democrat Karen Bass today became the first African-American woman to be Speaker of the State Assembly, California's most powerful elected office after the Governor. In today's LA Times and in a speech to her colleagues in Sacramento, she says California, for all its wealth and resources, faces financial "disaster."
