Republicans in the House Vote to Not Vote on a Payroll Tax Extension ()

The Republican-dominated House of Representatives today turned down the Senate’s bi-partisan compromise on extending the pay roll tax-cut and unemployment benefits.  Speaker John Boehner reportedly tried to persuade his caucus to go along with the Senate’s two-month deal.

Dissidents say more Syrians were killed today after 114 died yesterday, including more than 70 army defectors trying to leave the country.  Also yesterday, the Assad regime agreed to admit observers from the Arab League, as the UN General Assembly condemned human rights violations. Will government brutality and sectarian differences lead to civil war?  Is there a workable model for non-violent change? We talk with one of the few western reporters who’ve been inside the country about his visit to Homs, where he says a million people are living in fear.
