The Republican-dominated House of Representatives today turned down the Senate’s bi-partisan compromise on extending the pay roll tax-cut and unemployment benefits. Speaker John Boehner reportedly tried to persuade his caucus to go along with the Senate’s two-month deal.

Also yesterday, the Assad regime agreed to admit observers from the Arab League, as the UN General Assembly condemned human rights violations.
