Republicans in the House Vote to Not Vote on a Payroll Tax Extension ()
The Republican-dominated House of Representatives today turned down the Senate’s bi-partisan compromise on extending the pay roll tax-cut and unemployment benefits. Speaker John Boehner reportedly tried to persuade his caucus to go along with the Senate’s two-month deal.

Also yesterday, the Assad regime agreed to admit observers from the Arab League, as the UN General Assembly condemned human rights violations. Will government brutality and sectarian differences lead to civil war? Is there a workable model for non-violent change?
