It's been reported that remote-controlled US drones have devastated the top leadership of the Taliban and al Qaeda in Pakistan. But yesterday, the US consulate in Peshawar was hit with guns, bombs and rocket-propelled grenades, the first such direct assault in that country since 2006.

Mayor Villaraigosa has threatened to implement a plan to close down all Los Angeles City departments except police and fire for two days a week, starting next Monday. It's all part of his dispute with the City Council over raising rates for the Department of Water and Power. This, after the DWP announced yesterday it would not contribute $73 million to the general fund.

Pope Appoints Latino Archbishop to Succeed LA's Cardinal Mahony ()
Cardinal Roger Mahony has introduced Los Angeles to the next man who will lead the nation's largest archdiocese. The Archbishop of San Antonio, Jose Gomez, will take over when Mahony turns 75 next year. Gomez is just 58. Michael Barber is Professor at John Paul the Great Catholic University in San Diego.
