next year’s California ballot will include the first presidential candidate ever nominated on line. We’ll hear about the party called Americans Elect—with big money and big plans to challenge Democrats and Republicans.

The City of Los Angeles impounds the cars of unlicensed drivers for up to 30 days, which costs an average of $2000.  Mayor Villaraigosa and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck want to end that practice—but the police rank and file say that would endanger public safety.  As we’ll hear, it’s all about the lives--and livelihoods--of illegal immigrants, who aren’t allowed to get licenses in the first place.

Pressure on Syria Increases as Bloodshed Continues ()

Dissidents say more Syrians were killed today after 114 died yesterday, including more than 70 army defectors trying to leave the country. Also yesterday, the Assad regime agreed to admit observers from the Arab League, as the UN General Assembly condemned human rights violations. Will government brutality and sectarian differences lead to civil war? Is there a workable model for non-violent change? We talk with one of the few western reporters who’ve been inside the country about his visit to Homs, where he says a million people are living in fear.
