Despite the happy memories of childhoods long ago, more and more California beach cities are getting rid of fire pits on the sand.  Newport Beach is the latest to impose a ban.  Is it really about air quality, child safety and public liability—or rich newcomers who want the beach all to themselves? One of America’s most controversial writers and editors died in New York this morning at the age of 90.  Helen Gurley Brown published “Sex and the Single Girl” in 1962 and was the editor of Cosmopolitan magazine for 32 years.  She was hailed as a champion of women’s rights and denounced by feminist leaders, including Gloria Steinem.

Moms United to Reform Drug Policy ()

A cross-country tour that began on the Mexican border arrived today on Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles.  Mexican poet Javier Sicilia is leading a caravan to Washington, calling attention to the billions of dollars spent annually on the so-called “war on drugs,” with no evidence of any lasting effect on either supply or demand.  In Mexico, the death toll from President Calderon’s battles with drug cartels is more than 50,000.  In the US, as LA Times columnist Steve Lopez points out, there are tens of thousands lost every year, “to addiction, prison and death by overdose.”
