Bush Says Navy Can Test Sonar off California Coast This month, a federal judge in Los Angeles ordered the Navy to create a nautical no-sonar zone off the California coast. Anti-submarine training would have to shut down if whales or other mammals got within 2200 yards. Critics contend that sonar signals will damage the marine mammals' hearing, with worldwide impact. During his trip to the Middle East, President Bush signed a waiver of court-imposed sonar limits, calling it an issue of national security. One environmental group says today he is "flouting the will of Congress," the state's Coastal Commission and a federal court. The controversy pits national security against whales and other marine mammals.
Is It Time to Crack Down on Elderly Drivers? Three years ago, George Russell Weller told Santa Monica police officers he had no idea how his Buick LeSabre accelerated through a crowded farmers' market, killing 10 people and injuring 60 more. The CHP says the most likely explanation is "pedal error," a driver mistakenly hitting the accelerator instead of the brake. It's all too common among elderly drivers, and Weller was 85 at the time. Today he went on trial, charged with 10 counts of manslaughter by the Los Angeles District Attorney with a maximum possible prison term of 18 years.

Replacing Obamacare: Now you see it… now you don’t As the Senate deliberates replacing Obmacare, health coverage for millions of people is at stake. There've been no public hearings, and a draft measure won't be made public. Is the House version so unpopular that that Senate is hiding a version that looks much the same?
