School’s out, the sun is shining, and you need that perfect book to take to the beach. KCRW talked to indie bookstore owners around Los Angeles about some of their favorites for this summer. If you’re looking for some inspiration, visit one of the stores, which we’ve mapped for you below.

Alison Reede of Diesel Books recommended “A Sense of Direction: Pilgrimage for the Restless & the Hopeful.” We’ll add more recommendations from bookstore owners all week, so stay tuned!

“Within a few short words you get the whole picture, you get the smell of the place. Again, he’s just a beautiful writer.”

“The Impeachment of Abraham Lincoln” was recommended by James Fugate of Eso Won Books.

“It’s an alternative view of history… It sounds like something that will be really interesting to read.”

“The Sisters Brothers” was recommended by Kerry Slattery of Skylight Books.

“It’s actually bloody at times and kind of gritty, but it’s also humongous and quirky and very touching”

Sherri Gallentine of Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena recommended “Shine Shine Shine.”

“It’s a love story I haven’t really read before… it’s so real and genuine.”

Phyllis Winthrop of Chevaliers Books in Hancock Park recommended “Wild.”

“You hike right along with her and you feel her aching feet and the gorgeous sunsets over the mountains.”

For those of you who like wandering through the aisles to find that perfect read, we mapped some of LA’s finest indie book stores below. You can add yours, too!
