5 Design Things to do This Week

1) Check out LA’s new Bioscience Corridor

Biosciences are said to be the future and Los Angeles plans to be front and center in this growth industry, specifically at La Kretz Innovation Campus, occupying a city block on the eastern edge of DTLA in the Arts District. On Tuesday, March 29, ULI Los Angeles presents  a tour of the new Innovation Campus – home of the LA Cleantech Incubator (LACI), as well as an expert panel on the innovation and investment opportunities there. Lab coat and safety goggles not necessary.

2) Photographic Sale Benefits Photography

Works by Berenice Abbott , Herb Ritts, Douglas Kirkland (above)  and other notable photographers will be on sale at a fundraiser to benefit the Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP), a 501(c)3 charitable organization, at its Second Annual Gala and Print Auction Fundraiser.

When: Tuesday, March 29, 2016, 7 pm- 10 pm

Where: Arena 1 Gallery, 3026 Airport Avenue, Santa Monica, CA 90405

Time: VIP admission begins at 6 pm. Credentialed Press preview at 6 pm with RSVP; General admission from 7 – 10 pm

3) Long Beach ePrix

Love Formula 1 racing but hate the engine noise, smell and fuel consumption? Try ePrix, the world’s first fully electric racing series featuring single-seater, open-wheel cars. Nine two-car teams compete in the championship that takes place this weekend at The Long Beach ePrix, Round 6 of the 2015-16 FIA Formula E Championship. At 1.32 miles in length, the seven-turn temporary street course is part of the world-famous Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach circuit, and has support from Michael Andretti, Sir Richard Branson and Leonardo DiCaprio. Drivers include ex-Formula 1 pilots Nick Heidfeld, Bruno Senna, Sebastien Buemi and Nelson Piquet Jr.

When: Saturday, April 2, 2016; Gates open at 8:00 am; Long Beach ePrix pre-race ceremonies begin at 3:30 pm

Where: The start/finish line is on Shoreline Drive and the circuit takes in the streets of downtown Long Beach surrounding the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center.

Tickets: General admission – $25; General admission including paddock walk – $35; Discount (children ages 13-16 and adults over 60) – $20; get tickets online here (tickets will be sold at the gate on the day of the event subject to availability.)

4) Wattles Mansion Showcase “Hollywood: The First 100 Years”

The heart of Hollywood in the heart of Hollywood.  Glamorous movie stars and iconic movies provide the inspiration for 18 re-imagined interior spaces in this historic mansion on 47 sprawling acres.  Acclaimed Los Angeles-based designers show off their design creativity worthy of a Hollywood Star.  ‘Muses’ include Midnight in Paris, The Artist, Audrey Hepburn, Clark Gable and many more.

When: March 25 – April 17

Where: 1824 N. Curson Ave, Hollywood Ca 90046

5) Leather Pride Week

Only in L.A.? Probably not, but you may have never seen anything like this week-long celebration of Los Angeles’ leather and fetish culture.  Don your leather-best (or leather-ette) and go along for the ride. Events this week include dance parties, film screenings, a meet-up for leather ladies, fetish events, and next Sunday’s Off Sunset Festival in Silver Lake, featuring live music , gourmet food trucks, three bars, art and specialty vendors.
