Design makes up a huge part of the American economy, but do Senator Kerry or President Bush feel government has a role in promoting American designers abroad, supporting arts education or funding R&D; for new technologies? Should the US follow the lead of Britain, Italy or Switzerland in sponsoring design as a cultural product and economic engine? Frances Anderton speaks with Virginia Postrel, author of The Substance of Style, Swiss-born San Francisco-based designer Yves Behar and Roger Mandle, president of the Rhode Island School of Design. Also a chat with leading architect Bill McDonough, winner of the Smithsonian 2004 National Design Award for the Environment, on the next industrial revolution.
