Huge Hits in 'American Sniper' and 'Empire'

Clint Eastwood's movie American Sniper starring Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle continues to be a huge hit at movie theaters across the country, but especially in the heartland. It's already made over $200 million and is on track to become the number one war movie of all time. But despite American Sniper's clout at the box office, it's not likely to shake up the Oscar race. The main shift in Oscar predictions follows the PGA and SAG Awards, which picked Birdman over Boyhood. On the TV side, Empire, starring Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, is proving to be a gift that keeps on giving for Fox. The hip-hop soap opera is gaining viewers every week, the first time a broadcast show has seen that kind of growth in more than 20 years. The show is a hit across genders and ethnicities, and last week the show was seen in 33 percent of all African American households. Empire is a boon for the broadcast networks in general and to those hoping to see more diversity on television.
