Netflix came close with 'Roma' last year, but as of yet, that Oscar best picture win remains elusive. This year they'll likely have even more contenders in the race, but you won't be to see them at most movie theaters. Some of their awards hopefuls like ''Marriage Story' and 'The Irishman' will be in a few theaters for 3-4 weeks before streaming on Netflix. The big theater chains aren't going along because they want a longer exclusive window before the films go to Netflix. Even as more and more movies are showing up on streaming shortly after release, there's still the sense among some top filmmakers that they want a wide release in movie theaters for a significant amount of time first.
