Little Saigon's Powerhouse Voting Machine

Hosted by

Although results haven't been certified, it's expected to be announced this week that Andrew Do won the special election for the First Supervisorial District, beating former supervisor Lou Correa. While Do's expected win isn't too surprising—he was a former Garden Grove councilmember and chief of staff to Janet Nguyen, who preceded him in the First District—the bigger story is the continued political juggernaut that is the Vietnamese-American electorate in Orange County politics. Since 2007, voters in Little Saigon have consistently put Vietnamese candidates—almost all Republican—over the top against far-better financed or more-prominent politicians. How did this machine arise—and will it survive into the second generation?
