Music For Your (Holiday) Weekend

Written by

Hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving. If you’re anything like me, then you’re moving a bit slower today after the big feast. Don’t worry, I have just the excuse to continue your weekend of laziness.

Here are some new releases I’m digging and I think you will too.

Anderson .Paak – “6 Summers”

Everyone knows the name Anderson .Paak by now. His latest release Oxnard continues the trend of fusing R&B, hip-hop, soul, funk, electronica, and those church chords that we fell in love with on his critically acclaimed 2016 release, Malibu. One big difference is there’s a heavy influence of G-funk on this record. Which only makes sense considering it’s his first album on Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Records; The Godfather of G-Funk. My favorite song so far “6 Summers.”

Foxwarren – “Everything Apart”

If could imagine The Band and Paul Simon having a baby, you’d get Foxwarren. For you youngsters, just imagine a mix of Damien Jurado and Fleet Foxes 🙂 This Canadian band is compromised of childhood friends that originally formed about 10 years ago over a shared love of Pedro the Lion. Foxwarren is led by KCRW favorite Andy Shauf, whose vocals you’ll quickly recognize in the single “Everything Apart,” taken from the forthcoming self-titled album.

Mk.gee – “Come on (You Know That I’m a Fool)”

If you’re a fan of bands like Toro y Moi, Astronauts, etc. or Jerry Paper then you’ll dig Mk. gee. I’m a big big fan and he is one of the highlights of 2018 in my opinion. He released a fantastic full-length this past May titled Pronounced McGee and has followed that up with the surprise Fool EP. Check out the visuals for the single “Come on (You Know That I’m a Fool).”
