Surfer Blood Live on KCRW – Say Yes to Me

Written by

I had three immediate responses to watching Surfer Blood play a set for MBE at the Village Studios (our home away from home in LA)

1) every song is hooky and catchy but not cloying in any way. Just enough rock (with some occasional punk growls) to give it some edge.

2) Boy, these kids from Florida look really young and fresh-faced  (and I hear they might be considering a move to LA)

3) Interesting how they all dress alike (they tell me it was a coincidence) and MBE Associate Producer Collin Walzak also wore a matching shirt. I think he’s trying to join the band.

As a native Floridian, I am particularly proud of these guys and have been following their career since their excellent early EPs. I love how they’ve grown on their latest album (“Pythons”, out in June)  and Jason can’t seem to get enough of them. It’s always a good sign when he bounces from song to song like he has been, with a new favorite every other week.

The full session is worth a listen. The band never made it through MBE on their first album so we got them to play some “oldies” too.

Check it out in the archives.
