What I Got at the Post Office Today by Chuck P

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

Wrapping up a week of great fundraising! Thanks to all the folks that work behind the scene to make these drives go smooth. It’s quite an undertaking and everyone should be commended. The weather has been beautiful as well. Perfect SoCal temps. We are so lucky to live in the greatest city on earth!

Good haul at the post this week… tho, I’ll try not to be so critical about the album artwork. Seems I upset one of the artists last week. Aw.

1) Kill Kill Kill – a split 7″ with Oxbow and a CDEP of some new stuff. These cats have evolved a lot over the years that I’ve been paying attention, and each evolution is interesting. Got an extra of these, so I’ll be passing it along to Henry Rollins, who loves this stuff. He’s a fanatic! Huge sound with these guys. Lots of experimenting. Should be cool.

2) Blood Orange “Coastal Grooves” – If the rest of the album is as good as “Sutphin Blvd”, which I’ve been playing for a few weeks now, it will be a best of 2011 contender. Such a great dark mood with lovely pop songwriting. A rare but welcome combo. Color me excited.

3) Luke Temple “Don’t Act Like You Don’t’ Care” – great album title. Interesting acoustic guitar madness and doesn’t slow down too much. It’s not folk but it’s not full on rock either. An eclectic mix of both without sounding like Jack Johnson.

4) Pisces – New solo project of Sarah Negahdari from Happy Hollows. Several years ago when I was working for another radio station here in LA, I had the chance to bring in the Happy Hollows to my show for an in studio performance. They were excellent. We also set aside time for Sarah to perform a couple of her solo tracks and I was so smitten. She’s an incredible guitar player when you peel back all of that distortion. She’s finally had the chance to record her songs and this is the final product. I can’t wait to hear more.

Honorable mentions include new music from Abigail Washburn, Pass Kontrol (nice homemade artwork guys!), The Gift and the latest from Stephen Malkmus, who I believe is due to perform on MBE tomorrow morning. Yay!

Hear a lot of this and so much more tonight at 12a.
