La Monte Young

Nov. 4, 1985

One of the most original and uncompromising figures in 20th century music, La Monte Young stands as a giant even among his more famous acolytes: Terry Riley, John Cale, Brian Eno, Yoko Ono, and scores of others have looked to Young for inspiration.

In November of 1985, Young and his companion Marion Zazeela came to KCRW to play excerpts from his epic long-form work, "The Well-Tuned Piano," and to chat with Deirdre. Their in-depth conversation runs over two hours and includes Young's love of water imagery, the evolution of his tuning system, and the role of intuition in composition.
