KCRW Broadcast 62

Fanatics!

Hello from sunny Johannesburg South Africa. I have been here for a few days. I have been doing a lot of press for the most part but managed to get some time to go to the Apartheid Museum yesterday. It was at once inspiring and depressing. Great to see all the photos of Mandela as a young man and being able to watch interview footage of him before he was incarcerated. There were a lot of parts that were hard to take, as you can imagine. I am glad I went. It made me want to know more and I will be pursuing that. I was happy to find out that I will be re-connecting with some people I met at a township in Cape Town years ago when I get there in a couple of days from now. I am not here for very long, only three shows. I will be onstage on Friday, May 14th in Minneapolis, to give you an idea of the flights ahead!

Things are very interesting in South Africa at the moment. I wonder how the country will deal with all the people coming in watch the World Cup next month.

So, what do we have for tonight? Another great mix, is what! Summer time means some classic Punk Rock, which you can see sprinkled all through our show. Some brand new Failing Lights makes itself heard, very cool. I think that album will be out soon. A classic and ancient moment by DEVO, who have a new album out now called Something For Everyone. I have only heard one track from it so far, when I was checking out Liza Richardson's show last week, I think it was. I am looking forward to hearing the whole thing for myself as soon as possible. Hopefully, there's a copy waiting for me at the office. Our Bud Powell-Ian Shoales-Clash blast is sure to please. I first heard the amazing Ian Shoales on KCRW, of course on a broadcast of Deirdre O'Donoghue. I sure miss her. New jams by one of our favorites, Ian Svenonius and his new joint Chain And The Gang, out on K Records. A little later on, a JB's track, Blow Your Head, that shows you were PE got the music for the track of ours we listened to tonight. Also, new Goot, new Buck Gooter, given to me by the Goots themselves when we, along with Dan Trice our resident Fall info source and contributor to our show were hanging out post show in Richmond VA weeks ago. Mr. Trice sent in a track only found on the Record Store Day single release of The Fall that we will play next month. I hope you all managed to get some of the cool releases that came out weeks ago. I got The Fall single as well as the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds 12” of Mercy Seat. I wanted to get the Crystal Castles 12” but it was too expensive. Perhaps we'll get the music for the show somehow. I don't know if we have every played any Cypress Hill on our show before. Luckily, they make clean versions of their albums for radio play, otherwise, they wouldn't stand a chance on the radio. We finish with some XBXRX and if Engineer X has some more time, he'll throw something else into the mix to make sure we hand off to the very talented DJ Liza Richardson with finesse. Next week's show will be a scorcher. We've got Rain, Coltrane, Neu!, new Kim Salmon, Cabaret Voltaire and so much more, you gotta tune in and check it! Until then, from way down Johannesburg way, as Miriam Makeba used to say, Jam the K and STAY FANATIC!!!
