Patricia Mulroy is the General Manager of the Southern Nevada Water Authority and the Las Vegas Valley Water District. Southern Nevada gets its water from the Colorado River which is currently experiencing the worst drought in 10 years. Lake Mead, Las Vegas' reservoir, has dropped by 1 percent each year.
The Water Authority severely restricts water use among Las Vegas residents and businesses. There are financial incentives for drought-resistant lawns: residents are paid $1.50 per square foot of lawn replaced with gravel.
