Left, Right and Gratitude

What does it mean to be an American? David Frum says it is about participating fully in the life of a country, but mourns the creation of a class of "somewhat Americans." Do you feel optimistic or pessimistic about America right now? Matt Miller said he worries about the possibility of a Bush vs Clinton ticket because that cuts against an ever-renewing, upwardly-mobile society where an average citizen has a shot. In an outpouring of Left, Right & Center gratitude, Bob Scheer recalls hard times and his father and uncles being given turkeys at the factory. Rich Lowry remembers William F. Buckley's words on gratitude.

Matt Miller (Washington Post) moderates from the Center. On the Left, Robert Scheer (TruthDig.com). Rick Lowry (National Review) and David Frum (The Atlantic) are both on the Right.
