What've You Heard?

This is Rob Long with Martini Shot on KCRW.

This is directed at the guy driving the BMW 5 series with a show in contention for the fall season.

I just got off the phone with somebody who was in the room when your pilot was screened and apparently it went very very well. The room liked it a lot and they're taking it to New York today for the final screening and it's definitely going to be discussed in the programming room. They haven't even started programming discussions yet -- they'll be doing those in New York with the chairman of the company and the head of entertainment and I think the head of current, although maybe the head of current isn't in the room by then, just the key entertainment figures and the president of sales. Oh, and the head of research, though I hear they're not cable testing your plot until Sunday night, which is when they all get to New York -- though I think the head of entertainment isn't going to be in New York until Monday -- but, anyway, Sunday night they'll have the testing numbers for your pilot which according to my guy had a great great screening and which everyone is really high on.

So congratulations.

Okay, now this is directed at the other guy driving the BMW 5 series with a show in contention for the fall season.

Hi. I just got off the phone with somebody who was in the room when your pilot was screened and apparently it went well, but the general sense of things is that it could have gone better. I mean, it's definitely going to New York -- it is going to be discussed in the programming room -- and I know that because a friend of mine saw the box of little magnetic sticky things that they use on that magnetic programming grid to move shows around and map out their schedule? And your show had one of those magnetic thingies, which not all of them do, which means they're planning to put it up on the big board in the scheduling room in New York. So you're on the bubble. It could go either way. I think that what ay help you is that I heard that the other family-ish pilot they have didn't test well at all -- people didn't like that guy, you know, that they gave that big deal to? And apparently sales in New York said that between the two shows they'd rather have yours because yours could potentially be moved basic cable if it came to that? So I'd say right now it's 50-50 -- well, 55-45 in a good way, but the wild card here is that the chairman of the company is going to be there and he's sort of out of it and wants the new Laverne and Shirley or whatever and I'm not sure that the head of entertainment is really going to be able to schedule the whole thing alone, but the good news is that the head of research is really influential and even though your pilot didn't test very well, the other pilot sort of in your area a bit tested even worse. Of course, all of this is assuming they're going to cancel two shows from Tuesday night. If they do, they'll need replacements and you'll be in great shape. If they don't, I can't see how they pick up more than 2 pilots, and they have those other two from before that they already gave commitments to, so... oh, and those two shows from Tuesday that they were going to cancel? Well, last Tuesday they both did really well, so...

So sorry.

I'm just kidding. If you're driving in a BMW 5 series and you have a show in contention for the fall season -- and I think the networks are going to announce their schedules in a few hours, right? -- I don't know anything. I haven't heard anything. I was just messing with your head.

Once, a couple of years ago, I was that guy driving the 5 Series with a show in contention for the fall schedule and I got a phone call just like that one. Actually. I got a phone call just like both of them. About the same show. Within five minutes of each other. Guess which one turned out to be right? Here's a clue: I have time to do radio commentaries.

That's it for this week. Next week, I plan my sabbatical. For KCRW, this is Rob Long with Martini Shot.
