OC Supes: We Need State, Not Local, Ethics Monitors

Hosted by

Last week, the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 to ask the California legislature to approve their motion to have OC campaign finance monitored by the California Fair Political Practices Commission. It's the culmination of a years-long effort by the Supes to wrest power away from local watchers, who have long clashed with them. Those watchers are pushing for a local ethics committee recommended by the Grand Jury, arguing there's too much political corruption in Orange County and not enough prosecution. Supervisors, on the other hand, endorsed Measure E, an initiative on the November ballot in which voters approved the Supervisors' move. Why does the Board -- which always fights against Sacramento's power in local affairs -- willing to make an exception for this?
