Over the weekend, the Orange County Register's parent company, Freedom Communications, declared bankruptcy — the second time in six years it's done so. The paper also announced that planning to submit a bid for ownership in court are publisher Rich Mirman and Mike Harrah, a Santa Ana developer who owns the Register's office building. It's an unlikely duo: Mirman's only been involved in journalism about a year, while Harrah's only experience with the media is with the many controversies involving his developments over the years. The two promise to buy the Register and continue the paper's mission — but are there other motives involved?
