‘Mischling’ explores beauty, hope amid terror in Mengele’s ‘Zoo’

Of the acts Nazis carried out during the Holocaust, the human experiments conducted by Josef Mengele were particularly horrific. At his co-called “Zoo” at Auschwitz, Dr. Mengele – the “Angel of Death” as he was known – mutilated, poisoned, murdered, and dissected children. He had a particular interest in identical twins. That fact has been an obsession for young novelist Affinity Konar. She has set her new novel in Auschwitz and it’s told from the perspective of a pair of 12-year-old twin girls, Stasha and Pearl.
