Doug Pray

surfwise.jpgDocumentary filmmaker Doug Pray manages to nose his way into outcast societies -- de facto families -- with his films. Hype, on the 90's Seattle music world, and Scratch on the DJ culture. His latest, Surfwise, is about the most exclusive family, father Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz, who turns his nine kids into champion surfers. It's all about tribal rights.

"Doc," legendary amongst the Californian surfing community, was the first to ride a wave in Israel, establishing as he did so, a surfing culture in Tel Aviv. Pray spent several years interviewing "Doc," his wife and all of their children. The resulting documentary is a fascinating study of pursuing one's dreams, and of the effect this non-conventional upbringing had on the children.
