Republicans in the Senate today refused to confirm the nomination of former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray to be the first director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. President Obama chided them for having "forgotten how we got into this mess," adding that "part of the reason we are in it is because we didn't empower our regulators," which is what the Bureau is designed to do.
