Eighty years ago, a production company shipped 14 buffalo to Catalina Island to be part of a film called The Vanishing American. When the film crews and actors left, the buffalo stayed behind, and the herd once increased to as many as 600. Now, 100 of the remaining 250-head herd will vanish from Catalina to reappear in South Dakota, where their ancestors came from in the first place.
