De-Criminalizing Elementary and Middle Schools Students

Hosted by

Last year two first-graders, six and seven years old, got tickets from campus police for being in a shoving match. That meant appearances in court and lost class time. Almost 5000 other school kids got tickets, with poor and minority children most likely to be cited by campus police. Now, there's a kinder, gentler policy, at least for kids 12 and under. We talk to the Chief of the LA Unified School Police. Also, if there's easy access and prompt service, will drivers give up crowded streets and freeways and ride public transit? LA planners say, "Yes," but a new survey shows, maybe not.
