After years of being underutilized and unrecognized, last night was a big night for African-American actors. Denzel Washington became the second to win best actor, Halle Berry became the first to win best actress, and pioneer Sidney Poitier received a special Oscar for lifetime achievement. Paula Woods, who has written about the frustration of black actors in Hollywood, talks about last night-s historic Oscars.
New DHS Chief Garthwaite's CPR for LA County
Two and a half million uninsured workers in Los Angeles County may soon have no place to turn for medical care. Also at risk are half the county-s trauma centers that serve the insured as well as the insured. Dr. Thomas Garthwaite is the new Director and Chief Medical Officer for LA County-s Department of Health Services. The former top medical officer for the Veterans- Health Administration faces a tremendous challenge as he looks for ways to deliver healthcare to the indigent and uninsured, and provide training for healthcare providers, armed with a rapidly shrinking budget.
