Public Pessimism about the Effects of Growth in California

Hosted by
Californians don-t understand just how rapidly the state-s population is increasing. When they get the real picture, 59 percent say it-s bad news for the future. That-s according to the latest survey on population growth by the Public Policy Institute of California. More than 2500 people were interviewed in English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese. Whites are the most worried, Latinos the most optimistic. Why are there such different opinions? Can the quality of life and the environment be preserved? Is -smart growth- possible? Is there any alternative? Warren Olney hears from the director of the PPIC study, an expert in land-use and growth policy, a political scientist, and the former mayor of Pasadena, who helped that city develop its Old Town.
